While studying at the university, he spent much of his time on the computer practicing programming skills. After Richard Liu’s restaurant as well as health product failing, in the year 1998, Richard Liu Qiangdong started selling parts of the computer in a shop that he had opened in Beijing, China. In the year 2003 the business had opened more than 12 stores and after many years of success and reaching some scale in 2004, the business ceased operating with a physical location and switched to online operation. Alibaba is another Chines firm that is known to have a rapid growth just like JD.com making the two the leading e-commerce rivals.

In the year 2015, Richard Liu was luck to marry an internet celebrity known as Zhang Zetian. The two started dating back in the year 2014 when Liu was studying in the Colombia University.
