Betsy DeVos Promises Change Within the Department of Education

Betsy DeVos seemingly appeared overnight on the national political stage after President Trump nominated her as the Secretary of Education. A devout Republican and a powerful voice in Michigan, Betsy DeVos brings a new look to the Department of Education with her focus on charter schools and public choice. DeVos may be one of the most mysterious of all of President Trump’s appointments, but it certainly looks like the world is going to get to know her and her values sooner than later.

Betsy DeVos was born and raised in Michigan and it was there that she coalesced around the values that her family and her heritage espoused. As a member of a largely Dutch community, DeVos would go on to attend Calvin College. There she would learn about and subsequently become a champion for school choice. After Marrying Dick DeVos, the two Republicans would work together to put school choice in the headlines as much as possible, all while standing firmly by their conservative Republican beliefs. Of DeVos’ history, this is the most well-known aspect.

As the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos will be standing up for both her own convictions and that of her party leader, President Donald J. Trump. Despite the fact that DeVos is unlikely to start a rift with her party, nobody should expect her to become the mouthpiece of the modern GOP. DeVos has never been one to hide behind her title and the concept of a ‘meek’ Betsy DeVos in charge of the United States Department of Education simply does not mesh with reality. In fact, President Trump’s most recent directive, rescinding federal protection for transgender students and school bathrooms, was met with firm resistance behind closed doors by Ms. DeVos. Still, when President Trump pushed for the directive, she understood the will of her party and became the ultimate team player.

For years, Betsy DeVos has been championing conservative ideals in the state of Michigan and now she will be taking that drive to Washington D.C. Despite her relatively quick ascension up the rungs of Government’s ladder, DeVos is already making an impression on those that she will be working with. A former attorney general by the name of Mike Cox said, “I found Betsy to be very determined, steely when she sets her mind on a goal.” This sentiment was echoed by Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation fo Teachers, “There is a real tendency to underestimate her.”
