American Institute of Architects Upholding the Architecture Profession

     The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is an American professional organization primarily for architects. The organization provides advocacy, education, public outreach and community redevelopment to assist the profession and maintain its good public image. AIA has its headquarters in Washington D.C. The reputable professional organization was founded by 13 architects in 1857. Its mission was to promote the profession.

The American Institute of Architects currently has 90,000 architects and associated professionals as members. The members are fully trained, qualified and licensed. On an annual basis, AIA avails resources for upcoming architecture professionals and funds education experiences meat to help architects in their work. Moreover, it promotes excellence by awarding outstanding architects. AIA also advocates for the architecture profession. It has also partnered with other professionals in the construction and design fields.

AIA also has an official magazine called The Magazine of the American Institute of Architects. The magazine is published on a monthly basis and its current Editor in Chief is Ned Cramer. AIA has employed more than 200 people and has 300 local chapters. Some of their other chapters are in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Japan. Every year it conducts the AIA Conference o Architecture. The annual conference brings the professionals together and promotes its continuity.

AIA has several levels of membership. These include the Architect membership, Associate membership and the International Associate membership among others. The AIA is administered by a Board of Directors. Robert Ivy is the current Chief Executive Officer of AIA. Thomas Vonier, on the other hand, is the President of the organization.

Robert Ivy, the CEO of AIA is a registered architect. Prior to joining AIA, Mr. Ivy was a magazine editor and also a corporate executive. He served as the Editor in Chief for the Architectural Record. During his tenure as the editor in chief, the journal emerged to be the most read architectural journal. Architectural Record acquired several publishing honors such as the Premier Magazine Journal Award among other prizes. He was then made the Editorial Director of McGraw Hill Construction Media.

Robert Ivy has received several awards in his career. He received the Crain Award in 2009 for his expertise in the architecture field. In 1998, he was awarded the McGraw Award for Management Excellence. He was named the “Master Architect” in 2010 and has been the first architect to be given the honor in the 21st century. He has published articles on architecture.
